Pewsey White Horse

Highlight • Monument

A giant horse cut into the chalk hillside, the Pewsey White Horse is visible from the Severn and Thames Cycleway. Although one of the smallest of the eight white horses in Wiltshire. The horse was originally cut by or for Robert Pile from Alton Barnes, in the 19th century, before being recut in 1937.

Hackpen Hill and White Horse Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Natural Monument

A lovely climb up Hackpen Hill overlooking the Hackpen White Horse chalk hill figure. The horse was cut by Henry Eatwell, a local parish clerk, in 1838 to commemorate Queen Victoria's coronation.

The hill's summit stands at 600 feet (180 metres). It's a bit of a slog but you're rewarded with lovely views over Wiltshire.

View of Hackpen White Horse

Highlight • Viewpoint

Like other White Horses in Wiltshire, the figure was created by removing the turf and exposing the white chalk underneath. As the slope at Hackpen Hill is less steep than for many other chalk figures, the horse had to be partially built up and designed with particular care to remain clearly visible from a distance.

The figure belongs to a long tradition of chalk drawings in Southern England. Many of these White Horses were created in the 18th and 19th centuries as local landmarks, expressions of regional pride, or to commemorate special events. The coronation of Queen Victoria in the same year is often cited as the occasion.
