Stepping Stones Across the River

Did this as part of the MTB West Country way. Whilst this section is very pretty don’t expect to ride the bike much if at all. If there has been significant rain fall some parts are likely impassable.

Bellever Tor

Fantastic Tor with big views in all directions and cannot be mistaken due to the triangulation point on its highest outcrop.

I almost always hike in from the North, coming from Postbridge which is a nice steady climb all the way to the base of this beautiful Tor.

Also to be noted that the nice wide path allows pushchairs and I myself have pushed my 4 yo to the top of Bellever Tor so we could play on these rocks together.

Dunnabridge Pound

Despite it sitting beside the B3357 Dartmeet road this is another of those ancient Bronze age structures. Its has certainly been used in more recent times as a cattle/sheep enclosure. Although back in the bronze age times up to 17 people lived here in a number of huts, one of which can just be made out in the centre of the walled ring. Just inside the entrance on the left is the Judges Chair, believe to have been brought here by the local Dunnabridge farmer. He maintained that a bench from Crockern Tor formed the seat and that the Crockern judges table formed the roof of the Judge’s Chair. What is for certain is that it was used as a shelter by those tending their animals within the Pound.

St Raphael's Church

St Raphael’s Chapel is a small church in the hamlet of Huccaby, near Dartmeet, on Dartmoor. It was built in 1868 as a combined chapel and schoolroom, and it has the distinction of being the only Anglican chapel in the country to be dedicated to the Archangel St Raphael. His name means ‘God’s Healing’ or ‘God has healed’ and he is one of the archangels who stood before the throne. He is also known as the patron saint of travellers1. The chapel has a simple interior with old school desks and chalkboards, and a stained glass window depicting St Raphael23. The chapel is part of The Beacon Parishes Mission Community, which includes five churches in the area.

Dartmeet and Clapper Bridge

Highlight • Natural Monument

Dartmeet is named as the meeting point of the two major tributaries of the Dart, the East Dart and West Dart rivers. This has been a crossing point for hundreds of years with the remains of an old clapper bridge near the current road bridge (built in 1792). It's a nice place to stop for a break before tackling the road climbs in either direction.
