Le Puy-en-Velay Historic Center

Highlight • Historical Site

Le Puy-en-Velay is quite an incredible city. Granite and lava stones are everywhere. Several religious buildings, such as the huge statue of Notre-Dame de France and the church of Saint Michel-d'Aiguilhe are placed almost 100 meters high on old volcanic chimneys. These buildings serve as landmarks and can be reached by taking stairs in the rock. The city has two specialties: the famous green lentils from Puy and lace. Lacemakers still practice this unique art. You will find them especially near the steps leading to Notre Dame Cathedral. Do not miss this visit. The church and its cloister are austere but the Romanesque architecture is magnified here.
There is a beautiful atmosphere in the lively streets of Le Puy. Puy also means volcano.

A major religious building in Puy-en-Velay, Notre-Dame Cathedral offers at 7 a.m., every day from April 1 to October 31 and at 7:30 a.m., Monday to Friday, from November 1 to March 31, the blessing of pilgrims. Whether you are walking towards Compostela or not, this stop is a must in the city.

Also interesting is the presentation of modern pilgrims among historical residents and professional groups of the city.

The city is one of the oldest French centers for Marian pilgrimages and is picturesquely situated in the lovely volcanic area of the Velay and therefore has a corresponding cultural and touristic importance.
The aim of the Marian pilgrims was a black Madonna in Notre Dame Cathedral. The Saint-Michel-d'Aiguilhe church is one of the most important and - due to its exposed location on an old volcanic vent - one of the most striking buildings in the city, alongside the cathedral.
The pink Notre-Dame-de-France statue of Mary on the Corneille lava rock above the cathedral is also visible from afar.

Around the Château de Polignac, you'll discover the various villages, often on foot, and the viewpoints overlooking the keep. Often rolling but quite hilly, this circuit will allow you to maintain your fitness while discovering a magnificent building.

A quick tour through a pretty stone village. Some fairly pleasant singletrack trails, not too technical.

Here's a nice little mountain bike tour around Puy en Velay passing through Polignac and the forest of the lords, a landscape that will take your breath away. Route that can be done on muscular mountain bikes and on gravel, with sections that are a little rough but nothing terrible.
