Zarrentin Monastery on Lake Schaalsee

Highlight • Religious Site

The former Cistercian nunnery "Himmelspforte" is located on the south bank of the Schaalsee. It was renovated extensively and down to the last detail in 2003-2006. The artistically designed, Gothic ribbed vaults are particularly interesting from an architectural point of view.

The Cistercian nunnery was founded in 1246 by Countess Audacia and her son, who later became Count Gunzelin III. von Schwerin, founded. As a so-called “virgin monastery”, it served as a place of education and refuge for the daughters of the counts and vassals from the neighboring counties as well as for Lübeck patrician families. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1552. After that it was used as a granary, brewery and district court. Youth hostel, residential building, library and home parlor used.

In the years 2003 to 2006 the monastery, an important monument of the architectural and state history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, was extensively and accurately renovated. The architects, builders and preservationists entrusted with the renovation succeeded in an outstanding way in bringing old building fabric and modern requirements into a convincing synthesis. The artistically designed Gothic ribbed vaults on the ground floor are particularly interesting from an architectural point of view. A permanent exhibition is set up in the cloister, which is directly related to the monastery and its history. Guided tours in the monastery and church are intended to familiarize visitors with the details of historical developments.

Legend has it that an abbess from the monastery was craving a whitefish dish. The devil offered to fetch her some whitefish from Lake Constance. He was to be back by midnight and, in return, would receive her soul. But as soon as the devil left, the abbess's guilty conscience wouldn't leave her alone, and she confided in a nun. The nun came up with the idea of setting the monastery clock forward an hour.

No sooner said than done. As the devil was passing over Lake Schaalsee with his net full of whitefish, the clock struck midnight. Enraged that he had yet another soul escaped him, he hurled the whitefish and net into the lake, where they have lived ever since.

Located on the southern shore of Lake Schaalsee is the former Cistercian nunnery "Himmelspforte." It was extensively and meticulously renovated between 2003 and 2006. The ornate Gothic ribbed vaults are of particular architectural interest.
The Cistercian nunnery was founded in 1246 by Countess Audacia and her son, the later Count Gunzelin III of Schwerin. As a so-called "Maiden Convent," it served as a place of education and refuge for the daughters of counts and vassals from neighboring counties, as well as for Lübeck's patrician families. The monastery was dissolved in 1552 as part of the secularization process. It was subsequently used as a granary, brewery, district court, youth hostel, residential building, library, and local history room, among other things.
Between 2003 and 2006, the monastery, an important monument to the architectural and regional history of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, underwent extensive and meticulous renovation.

The architects, builders, and monument conservationists entrusted with the renovation succeeded brilliantly in creating a convincing synthesis of the old building structure and modern requirements. Of particular architectural interest are the artistically designed Gothic cross-ribbed vaults on the ground floor. A permanent exhibition has been set up in the cloister, which has a direct connection to the monastery and its history. Guided tours of the monastery and church are intended to familiarize visitors with the details of its historical development.
