View of the Berggeistweiher

Highlight • Viewpoint

Somewhere in the lake runs the border between the town of Bornheim in the Rhein-Sieg district and the town of Brühl, which belongs to the Rhein-Erft district. But that doesn't have to bother us hikers when we walk along the lakeshore, it's definitely possible to have a nice walk in the Villewald with a lake panorama.

Berggeistsee

Highlight • Lake

The "Berggeistweiher" is one of more than two dozen bodies of water in the "Ville" between Brühl and Liblar, which offer hikers a wonderful variety of walks in the woods. Historically, today's nature and landscape conservation area in the "Rhineland Nature Park" is a former mining area, where lignite was mined in opencast mines long ago.

Swimming in the Berggeistweiher pond is not permitted. The Berggeistweiher pond is a nature reserve, and all water sports, including swimming, are prohibited there. There are also no designated swimming areas.

In addition to the general swimming ban, there was recently a fatal swimming accident in the Berggeistweiher pond, resulting in the death of a man. This underscores the dangers associated with swimming in this lake.

Birkhof Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Like so many chapels, the Birkhof chapel is said to owe its existence to a wondrous event: a gamekeeper in Walberberg once found a picture of the Pietà in the forest "Am Muttergottesbildchen". A small half-timbered chapel was built in her honor. When the forest was cleared at this point in 1862, the chapel was moved towards Badorf. 50 years later it stood in the way of lignite mining. It has now been moved again to its present location. In 1912, Berggeist AG had today's chapel built in its neo-Gothic form. After being damaged in World War II, it was provisionally renovated. In 1952 the chapel received a new image of the Mother of God, a Pietà created by the sculptor Tophinke and donated by the Catholic men's work. In 1978 the chapel was completely renovated and inaugurated in 1980. Even today, the chapel invites people to present their concerns to the Blessed Mother. Every year, the men from Brühl make a penitential pilgrimage to this site, which invites them to rest and pray.

This afternoon, after a doctor's appointment and work, we went for a quick lap around the Berggeistweiher and Lake Lucretia at home.

Just clear your head and go on a short snow hike in this wonderful weather.

Simply incredibly beautiful.

Today I went for a short walk around Lake Lucretia and the Berggeistweiher (formerly known to me as Walberberger See) with a friend and her dog Tessie. A nice round with great views of the two lakes.
The last time I was there was in November 2021 and I have to say a lot has changed. Many fallen trees and …

A very nice short hike (walk) around the Berggeistweiher pond. Unfortunately, the restaurant at Birkhof is permanently closed.
