View of Stonehenge

Highlight • Historical Site

Stonehenge is a must-see destination for any cyclist who happens to be in the area, much like the not too distant Avebury site (see highlight komoot.com/highlight/3309344).

According to Wikipedia "Archaeologists believe that Stonehenge was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the first bluestones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC, although they may have been at the site as early as 3000 BC."

Considering that this man-made site has been standing for about 5,000 years and that some of its construction materials, sarsen stones weighing around 25 tons, were quarried and then transported by the builders from the Preseli Hills, 150 miles (240 km) away in modern-day Pembrokeshire in Wales we can only admire this feat of human ingenuity.

From this spot, you can see Stonehenge standing proudly in the distance. As soon as I saw it, though, I knew I had to get closer. Keep riding along this track and take the path right and you can get as close to this Neolithic monument as the paying tourists do.

The Bridge Inn

Highlight • Pub

Upper Woodford is a pretty village in the charming Woodford Valley. The Sarsen Way long-distance trail passes through the village, while the Monarch's Way skirts it to the south. Walkers are welcome in the local pub, the Bridge Inn, which serves traditional pub grub, has outdoor seating in its riverside garden and has a wood-burner for those chillier afternoons and evenings.
