Saint Maternus Church, Ottrott

Highlight • Religious Site

In the heart of Alsace, at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, lies Ottrott, world-famous for its red wine. This charming little village nestled in the countryside is the land of Mont Sainte-Odile and welcomes visitors to a flower-filled atmosphere. Hiking trails lead to the discovery of the 10.5 km long "Mur Paien" (pagan wall) in the heart of the forest, whose origins remain unknown. Winemakers, for their part, have used their expertise to enhance the "Rouge d'Ottrott," a Burgundy grape variety cultivated in the region since the 11th century. Perched on a hilltop is the Mont Sainte-Odile Abbey, a pilgrimage center in Alsace. Magnificent panoramic views offer views of the Alsatian plain and the Vosges Mountains.

Elsberg Hut with panoramic views

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Was curious what kind of kiosk it is here and I was already looking forward to a beer, but then it was just an old hut with table and benches and the water brought was allowed to be enjoyed here :-)

Mount Sainte-Odile

Highlight • Settlement

Fantastic view. Historical and cultural highlight.
The monastery complex now also houses a hotel and a restaurant. The monastery can largely be visited freely and there are many corners to go 'into yourself'.
The place is widely known and popular, so it is usually well frequented.

Along the Way of the Cross, 14 ceramics decorate the rock walls of the monastery plateau.
They come from the ceramist Leon Elchinger (1871-1942).

Saint Odile's Spring

Highlight • Natural Monument

Either walk a few minutes and fill the water here yourself - or buy high up in the monastery expensive.

Chapel Saint-Nicolas

The probably last major hike this year took us back to the holy mountain of the Vosges.
The monastery was founded in the 7th century!
Where miraculous things happened soon 🤷
The early Middle Ages are still noticeable.

And by the way, this is where the Habsburgs originated....

Incredibly interesting place!

From Ottrott near Obernai, today's route (unfortunately also the last of the 3-day girls' tour) led first via the pilgrimage route, then via the Sentier des Chasseurs via a holy spring (to help with eye problems....) up to Mont Sainte-Odile, the mystical holy mountain of Alsace, crowned by the Hohenburg monastery. A Way of the Cross leads all around, the …

After several weeks of abstinence from Komoot, finally a hike that suits my taste: a lot of German/French culture and history combined with the most beautiful nature experiences on mostly narrow mountain/forest paths with some great viewpoints.

And all of this in the nice company of Ann and Christian, as well as Sergej and Patrick. The original tour idea came …

The area surrounding the monastery on Mount Odilienberg is one of the most magical places anywhere. The hike feels almost like a fairytale – surrounded by ancient forest, soft carpets of moss, and enchanted paths. Rock formations, intricate carvings, and the quiet, solitary atmosphere make the walk a special experience.

A wonderful hike with mom @🚲 Gabi 🚲 and @Manja in the Vosges.

We started at the free hiking car park in Ottrott, always uphill to the heath walls with a detour to Darstein Castle, then past the walls again to Odilienberg, past the St. Nicolas Chapel and back to Ottrott.

I did a nice tour in Alsace today. All paths, whether narrow or a little wider, were wonderful to walk on. Some of them could have been in the Palatinate, sandy, with heather and blueberries and smelling of pine trees.
