L'Hers Castle

Highlight • Castle

Between the vineyards and the Rhône, the ruins of Château de l’Hers tell more than a thousand years of history. Formerly a toll station and medieval lookout, this 10th-century relic, restored and listed as a historical monument, stands proudly on its rocky spur — a perfect setting for a soulful photo.

Remarkable avenue of plane trees

Highlight • Cycleway

What a pleasure to ride in the shade of these possibly century-old plane trees. An alley like you hardly see anymore. This section is on a ViaRhona (VR) route

When approaching the city from the west, you automatically have to cross this bridge, which offers a spectacular view of the Avignon "skyline" and the Pont St Bénézet.

The Pont Saint-Bénézet was probably once, when the popes still resided in Avignon, the longest bridge in Europe and led over both arms of the Rhône to the papal palace. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the former arched bridge remains. If you would like to enter it, you unfortunately have to pay admission today.

Really well designed and surfaced cycle paths, add them to your trip

Before crossing the counter-canal, the bridge is very high, offering a view all along the Rhône: to the north with a zoom we see the castle of Châteauneuf du Pape, and to the south the city of Avignon. And in the distance you can see the Alps, better contrasted if there is snow above.

From Avignon to Sorgues on the Via Rhona. Without Komoot you are helpless in Avignon with route guidance. Otherwise very nice bike paths. A lot of water flows through Sorgues, but it's not the "Venice of Provence" promised by the Lonely Planet travel guide.
The market day makes up for it and Picasso was here too...

Today's tour took me to Avignon, where I was greeted by the famous Saint-Bènèzet Bridge and the imposing view of the Papal Palace. I passed through the city walls into an imposing old town with narrow streets and impressive buildings—a true postcard picture! The route then led me to the idyllic wine-growing village of Châtenauneuf-du-Pape, perfect for a break. The …

The tour was really freestyle, because many of the paths that Komoot suggested were not suitable, paths that Komoot didn't propose but definitely! Some did not suggest Komoot, but they were brand new 08/23 and drove great. bad luck was that they ended in nirrwhana. That was also signposted, but as an active biker you like to ignore something like …
