Otto Maigler Lake

Highlight • Lake

Lake Otto-Maigler is a lake in the city of Hürth in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia. It originated after the brown coal mining in a planned open pit mine hole. At the lake there is a beautiful outdoor pool with a sandy beach. Rowing, surfing and swimming take place here by the lake. The lake can be completely circumnavigated or explored by bike.

New park benches are currently being set up around the Otto-Maigler-See. The first have already been successfully installed by the Rhineland Nature Park.
In the coming weeks, more are to follow on the lower and upper sea route, so that complete equipment with seating around the lake will soon be guaranteed again. In winter, the old benches around the lake had to be removed due to significant defects. "For reasons of traffic safety, we could no longer leave the old benches, even if we incurred the anger of many walkers," explains Frank Pechtheyden, district forester on Lake Otto Maigler. In cooperation with the Landesbetrieb Wald und Holz and the Eifel National Park, the Rhineland Nature Park planned the new benches and had them built accordingly.
“We are happy that we can set up the benches faster than planned! It was also important to us that visitors to the lake could quickly use benches again, ”says Harald Sauer, managing director of the nature park. The new benches are all made of local wood that comes from the Kottenforst.
They consist of three parts: a foot made of weatherproof robinia and the seat and back made of oak. Thanks to the simple design, damaged benches can be repaired on site in the future and no longer have to be brought to the workshop with a lot of work.
