Annelies, the eldest daughter of a peasant family, learns what it means to be a farmer's wife. But the thought that she should inherit the farm once burdened her even as a little girl.
Annelies learns early what it means to be a farmer. On the 400-year-old farm of her parents, the work never goes out, and the children have to help with it. If her classmates tell about their vacation trips after the summer holidays, Annelies can not have a say.
She spends the holidays alone with her grandmother on the Gindlalm, which belongs to her parents' farm. Keep the cows, milking them, stir the churn, baking Kaiserschmarrn for the hikers. These are your holiday experiences. The idea that she, as the oldest child, should inherit the farm and the pasture, burdens her.
She is seven years old when her brother is born. This frees them from the parents' expectations. After school she works as a saleswoman, goes abroad for a year, marries and gives birth to two children. But whenever there is a problem at the parents' farm, she feels obligated and jumps in.
When her father and her brother die within a year, Annelies has to take over responsibility for the farm and the pasture. Only many years later does she feel that the Gindlalm is the place in her life that she has always longed for.
