The Westerplatte was formed by sand deposits at the former Vistula estuary. The main stream of the Vistula, which previously flowed into the Baltic Sea near Danzig, broke on February 1, 1840 about 20 kilometers east of Danzig near the village of Neufuhr through the dune belt that separated the low-lying Werder (formerly part of the Vistula Lagoon) from the Baltic Sea . As a result, the lower reaches of the former Vistula became de-energized, resulting in the "Dead Vistula". This was expanded to become a port canal as a result of regulatory work. Westerplatte, which has thus become a peninsula, lies on its right bank. It is surrounded by the port canal to the south and the Baltic Sea to the west and north, and is about 60 meters wide to the east where it connects to land. Its length is about two kilometers, the greatest width is about 600 meters. The harbor canal connects the port of Gdańsk and the then three Gdańsk shipyards to the Baltic Sea. From 1924 to 1939 there was a fortified Polish ammunition depot within the borders of the Free City of Danzig.
