Abbott Loop Community Park (Abbott Loop Family Park)

Highlight • Rest Area

This park has open sports fields, a picnic pavilion that is free for use if not reserved by another party (fee applies), and some playground equipment. It's also a great place to access the unpaved, but still pretty easy to ride, network of multi-use trails on this side of town.

Viewpoint Trail

This packed-gravel doubletrack isn't just part of the trail network here in Campbell Tract. It's also an important part of the route known as the Tour of Anchorage. Technically the Tour of Anchorage is a ski marathon, but there is a bike division and the overall route is very popular for recreation all year 'round.

The north end of this trail is very close to another trail known as Rover's Run, which is closed every year to reduce the risk of dangerous (and sometimes fatal) bear encounters. Please respect the warning signs and trail closure, for your safety.

Elmore Road multiuse trail

The multi-use trail along Elmore Road starts off looking very urbanized, marked by a curved pedestrian bridge over the first major road intersection. But the farther north you follow this paved trail the more interesting it gets, passing through greenbelts and even sporting a few sculptural and artistic touches. Bikes are welcome here, but please watch out for slower trail users!

You may see a lot of happy, loose dogs around here, because nowadays University Lake is an off-leash dog park. It's still a lovely green space bordering on some of the city's more popular commuter and leisure trails, though.

Connector Junction

At this point, you'll encounter a junction that links to a connector trail. Here, you have the choice to stay on or leave the Chester Creek Trail, or transition onto the connector trail that connects to both the Ship Creek Trail and Campbell Creek Bike Trail.

Chester Creek Trail

It's hard not to love this paved, multi-use trail that runs east-west through a greenbelt that transects almost all of Anchorage. It also ties into Goose Lake Park and the wider Anchorage trail system.

Goose Lake and Park

Highlight • Lake

Goose Lake is situated in central Anchorage, near the university area. Despite being in the heart of the city, it's a peaceful spot where you can see Pacific loons nesting at the far end of the lake from mid-May to mid-September. You can rent paddleboats from the Paddleboat cafe (on certain days) for a closer look at the loons. Be sure to respect the signs and keep your distance. The lake is also popular for swimming on hot summer days, and there's a play area for kids, walking trails, and a cafe nearby. It's a great place to relax and enjoy nature in the city.

Goose Lake Park

The sand beach on this side of Goose Lake is a popular swimming spot during the summer (despite the presence of stubborn swimmer's itch). It's also the perfect staging spot for a run, with lots of parking so you can usually find a spot, except on very sunny weekend days.
