Trapani

Highlight • Settlement

Trapani was born as a port for the nearby village of Erice around the year 1000 BC and owes its subsequent development to the alliance with Carthage. When Carthage was finally defeated by the Romans, Trapani and its population were opposed by the central government, causing a period of decline and depopulation. The city regained a central role during the Arab and then Norman domination. Since then, Trapani has maintained a certain importance during the succession of various dominations, thanks to its position and its resources. Suffice it to say that the salt mines, still in operation today, date back to the Phoenician era, while the port has gradually transformed from a commercial hub to a tourist hub thanks to its proximity to the Egadi islands and the African coast.

View of the Aeolian Islands

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Aeolian Islands are otherwise the Aeolian Islands. The archipelago located in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of Sicily has 17 islands (10 small and 7 larger ones: Lipari, Salina, Vulcano, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea). The Aeolian Islands are cones or remnants of volcanoes, there are active volcanoes on Stromboli and Vulcano. The islands of the archipelago can only be reached by sea - mainly from Milazzo and Naples. Only three islands (Lipari, Salina and Vulcano) have roads suitable for car traffic. Drinking water is transported by ships from Messina and Naples, as well as from precipitation collected in special containers on the roofs of houses (tanks) and from cisterns located in the mountains.
