Grand Ducal Palace

The Grand Ducal Palace, the city residence of the Grand Ducal Family, is located in the middle of the old town district. At the site of the current palace, there was once the first town hall of the city of Luxembourg, whose origins date back to 1418. After the town hall was destroyed in 1554 by a gunpowder explosion, it was rebuilt 20 years later. In 1741, the stone balustrade of the balcony was replaced by a wrought-iron balustrade, which still exists today. In the mid-18th century, the building was extended on the right side with a Baroque-style building known as the "Stadtwaage" (City Weigh House). In 1890, the Chamber of Deputies was erected on the right side of the palace. Since 1890, the main building has served as the Grand Ducal Palace. From 1992 to 1995, the palace was extensively restored.
