View of Flügelsberg Castle Ruins

Highlight • Viewpoint

The former Flugelberg Castle in the Meihern district of Riedenburg was the seat of the Flügelsberg taverns in the 13th century.

The Flügelsberg Castle was probably built at the beginning of the 12th century, at least the castle was first mentioned in 1228. In 1290 the castle was severely damaged in a dispute between the Bavarian dukes. In the 15th century, the castle of Flügelsberg came into the possession of the Murach family, who, as robber barons, made the imperial city of Nuremberg their enemy.
As a result, Nuremberg went to war against the Murachers in 1446 and destroyed the castle. The castle was later rebuilt and came into the possession of the Parsbergs through marriage. During the Löwler War, the castle was robbed in 1492 by Duke Albrecht of Bavaria and destroyed again.
In the 16th century a castle was built on the hilltop that collapsed in the 19th century. Today only a few remnants of the ring wall from the 12th and 16th centuries can be seen from the Flügelsberg Castle.

Riedenburg Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The city of Riedenburg is located in the Altmühltal between Kehlheim and Beilngries. The Altmühl Panoramaweg leads directly through the recognized health resort. In a historic setting (first mentioned in 1111), the traveler can spend a break here and strengthen themselves. Museums, churches and other attractions delight the culturally interested. A special highlight is the medieval festival, which takes place every two years. For the maintenance of the fluid balance, the two local breweries offer themselves.

Very nice tour in great surroundings. Today I drove to Dietfurt. Shortly before that I came across a small cable ferry, where you had to lend a hand to reach the other bank. I found that totally amusing. Great that something like this still exists 😃

Nice tour. Maybe a little too often 🙈 schnitzel, cola wheat, schnapps and headwind are not a good combination 😅🙂

On the second day of our stay in the Altmühltal, we headed from the location near Beilngries in the direction of Kehlheim. Since we also wanted to enjoy a boat trip, we had to turn back in Essing shortly before Kehlheim to get the ship to Riedenburg. All in all a successful combo :-)

In wonderful weather, we went to Dietfurt an der Altmühl for a coffee and a little detour up to Schönblick with a great view of Dietfurt and the Altmühl valley and back to Kelheim.

... because the mountain ⛰️ is a bit difficult 🦵... we'll just continue on with the bike 🚴‍♀️ in a great area here in the Altmühltal 😍

Today I went on a really nice tour in the Altmühl Valley 🤩 in glorious cycling weather 🌤. I started in Essing at the Tatzelwurm and immediately went up steeply over the Kreuzfelsen to Randeck Castle. Today the tower was open 😄. From up there you have a magnificent view. I continued through the forest 🌳🌲🌳 to the Galgental. I …
