St. Catharine's Church, Westensee

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Catherine's Church in Westensee is under the patronage of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The fieldstone building dates mainly from the first half of the 13th century. The Gothic choir and the massive brick west tower were added later. Burial chapels for local nobles have been added to the north and east sides. Inside is the epitaph of Daniel von Rantzau, the oldest Renaissance work of art in Schleswig-Holstein. The church was extensively restored at the beginning of 2025.

This is the mansion of Gut Deutsch Nienhof, where 2022 stayed for a week in the holiday home called Apfelgarten.
There we took part in a guided tour of the manor house.
The guide was the master of the house.
One of the participants asked about the house spirit and we learned that Count Rantzau is the house spirit.
The Rantzau Forest is near where I live and there is the final resting place of Count Rantzau.
Tip for everyone who follows me on Komoot: Enter Rantzau as a search word. On one of the tours that I occasionally repeat, I took photos of the burial site.
