Opatowska Gate

The Opatower Gate was built by Casimir the Great in the 14th century as part of the city fortifications. In addition, Sandomir had three other city gates: the Kraków, Lublin and Zawichoster city gates, as well as two smaller entrances, of which the Dominican gate is still preserved. In the 16th century, the Gothic gate was given a Renaissance-style attic, donated by the town doctor Stanisława Bartolona. The city gate has survived unchanged in this form. During the January Uprising, on February 8, 1863, a battle between insurgents and Russian Cossacks took place at the gate. From the gate there is a wide view over the city and the Sandomier Basin (Wikipedia).

On this beautiful and vast paved square, we like to take photos in front of the town hall. This ancient fortress, flanked by its white tower, dates from the Gothic era. Much of the rest of the city dates from the same period. You will find many 14th century houses in the old part of the city.
