The Maastunnel is the oldest immersed tunnel in the Netherlands. It connects the banks of the Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam. The tunnel includes four tubes: two for cars, one for cyclists and one for pedestrians. Construction started in 1937 and was completed in 1942. More than 75,000 motor vehicles and around 7,000 cyclists and mopeds, in addition to 150 pedestrians, use this tunnel every day.[2] The Maastunnel therefore forms an important link in the Rotterdam road network. There is a speed limit of 50 km/h for fast traffic. The Maastunnel is 3.90 meters high. The previous viaducts in the tunnel traverse, under the Maastunnelplein and the Droogleever Fortuynplein, are 3.60 meters high. It regularly happens that trucks that are too high get stuck under these viaducts.
The architects were J.P. van Bruggen and Ad van der Steur.

Willems Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

In 1927 the bridge was jacked up several meters and stripped of its ornaments. The bicycle and pedestrian path were also moved to the outside of the bridge, because the sharp increase in road traffic caused increasingly dangerous situations. Until the opening of the Maastunnel during the Second World War, the Willemsbrug was the westernmost fixed bank connection across the Maas, so that increasingly important international traffic also used this connection straight through the old center of Rotterdam.

The Willemsbrug played an important role during the Second World War. Marines from the nearby Marine Barracks on Oostplein defended this bridge and the adjacent railway bridge and quay 'Boompjes' since the German invasion on May 10, 1940. The resistance of the Dutch marines was much stronger than the Germans had expected. The Marines managed to hold back the advance of the German troops until the Germans decided to bomb the center of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940.

Katendrecht Ferry Harbor

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Municipal Archives states that the names containing "veer" all refer to the ferry from Rotterdam to Katendrecht. In 1599, the city received this ferry between Katendrecht and Coolhoek on a leasehold basis from the Knighthood, Nobles, and Cities of Holland and West Friesland for 10 guilders per year. The city of Rotterdam bought off this lease in 1849 for 150 guilders. Coolhoek was the section of Schieland's Hoge Zeedijk where it bends westward at the Vasteland. The ferry was later moved further south when the Nieuwewerk was incorporated into the city. In 1708, reference was made to the new ferry at the tollhouse. It was then called Ponteveer, and the small harbor there, which had to be moved south due to the construction of the Second Nieuwewerk, was first called Pontegat, later Veerhaven. In 1827, the construction of the Veerdam and the excavation of the Kleine Veerhaven (Little Ferry Port) or Nieuwehaven were put out to tender. This harbor was filled in 1910/11. The Veerhaven was dug between 1852 and 1854. The Linker Veerdam and Linker Veerhaven received this addition because they are located on the left bank of the Meuse. The Veerlaan runs across the Katendrecht peninsula to the Linker Veerdam. Appointment decision of the Mayor and Aldermen: March 13, 1888.
