The Municipal Archives states that the names containing "veer" all refer to the ferry from Rotterdam to Katendrecht. In 1599, the city received this ferry between Katendrecht and Coolhoek on a leasehold basis from the Knighthood, Nobles, and Cities of Holland and West Friesland for 10 guilders per year. The city of Rotterdam bought off this lease in 1849 for 150 guilders. Coolhoek was the section of Schieland's Hoge Zeedijk where it bends westward at the Vasteland. The ferry was later moved further south when the Nieuwewerk was incorporated into the city. In 1708, reference was made to the new ferry at the tollhouse. It was then called Ponteveer, and the small harbor there, which had to be moved south due to the construction of the Second Nieuwewerk, was first called Pontegat, later Veerhaven. In 1827, the construction of the Veerdam and the excavation of the Kleine Veerhaven (Little Ferry Port) or Nieuwehaven were put out to tender. This harbor was filled in 1910/11. The Veerhaven was dug between 1852 and 1854. The Linker Veerdam and Linker Veerhaven received this addition because they are located on the left bank of the Meuse. The Veerlaan runs across the Katendrecht peninsula to the Linker Veerdam. Appointment decision of the Mayor and Aldermen: March 13, 1888.
