First documented in 1238, Castelbello Castle dominates the Venosta Valley from a rocky outcrop on the left bank of the Adige River. From the cycle path, it is clearly visible above several apple orchards.

THE VINSCHGER RAILWAY TRAIN ACCIDENT – 2010
On Monday, April 12, 2010, a train on the so-called “Latschander”, between Kastelbell and Latsch in the South Tyrolean Vinschgau (northern Italy), was hit by a mudslide of 400 cubic meters and a width of ten to 15 meters.

The train was traveling towards Meran at 9 a.m. when it was surprised by the mudflow, which buried parts of the train. The accident left 9 dead and 28 injured.

The mudslide was caused by water that escaped from a sprinkler system due to a defective valve and soaked the ground above the railway line.

The criminal trial took place without the participation of co-plaintiffs, as the insurance company had already paid out compensation to the injured parties, and ended with an acquittal for all defendants.

The train accident on the Vinschgerbahn was also caused by the use of water for economic purposes.

On the side of the road above the accident site, a memorial stone commemorates the victims.

It's either at the end of the climb or at the beginning of the descent! In spring, there are often bee colonies buzzing along the roadside! Better keep your mouth shut. 🙂

The Etsch cycle path is around 300 kilometers long and a great opportunity to cycle through the Alps without many inclines. Past castles, idyllic towns and cozy wine villages - this path is to enjoy. This section is separated from the traffic and well paved, so perfect for the road bike.
