Historic Center of Massa

Highlight • Historical Site

Massa, the "city of marble" preserves the memory of a glorious era…
You see this everywhere in the old city: fountains, curbs, house sills, window frames are made of white marble.

Marble is literally and figuratively the cornerstone of the community here. Almost everyone here lives from the proceeds of white gold. You see marble everywhere in Italy and almost all of that marble comes from the quarries of Massa.

For centuries, artists and sculptors managed to find their perfect blocks here. Michelangelo was a regular in this area. He personally came to select 'his' marble blocks.
Know that in this region around Massa - Carrara there are about 300 marble quarries, most of which are still being exploded.

We start our discovery in the religious heart of the city. Like accomplished seminarians, we stride past 18th-century palazzi and white-paved marble squares. Triggered by history, we hoped to reach our climax at Castello Malaspina. Unfortunately, due to closure, we return to square one hungry...

Chiesa di San Sebastiano is certainly worth mentioning. Contemporary murals tell Biblical stories and can be understood in all languages.
Spiritually satisfied and dazzled by splendor and splendor, our Mass story ends in the Chiesa di San Sebastiano.

Going up towards the Passo del Dress, the green expanses that cover the mountain slopes and the depth of the view towards the coast stand out.

Just a few kilometers from the coast, the mountains rise, some of them over 1000 meters high. It is also fun to cycle down the serpentines to Massa.

Passo del Vestito

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Incredibly, this passage is little known, but beautiful. From both sides you can admire wonderful views. Although the climb is long, the pass does not have a prohibitive slope. There are some short tunnels on both sides.

The driveway to Passo del Vestito from Massa is in itself very worthwhile. From the sea smooth 1000 meters. From the hustle and bustle of the city in quiet nature.
The section behind Altagnana makes the Vestito one of the most beautiful passes I know.
First, it goes into a narrow valley section. Coming up to Antona, the view widens again and you have a nice view of Altagnana, which you have just passed through.
The higher you get, the farther the view will be, until the sea becomes visible behind the plain before Massa.
In the upper part of the road pulls in beautiful serpentines up the steep slope and there are first marble breaks in the field of view.
