Church of Our Lady of Succor

Highlight • Religious Site

Inside the Chiesa del Soccorso, there is the chapel of the Crucifix which dates back to 1791; the crucifix is a wooden sculpture from the 15th century and according to popular legend, it was found at sea by some sailors who, unable to return due to the poor conditions, placed the cross inside the church.

The Antica Fabbrica di Ceramiche Mennella, with its 500 years of history, follows the great tradition of the island of Ischia, famous for the processing of terracotta and the production of vases as early as the eighth century BC. as demonstrated by exceptional archaeological finds including the famous Cup of Nestor, admirable testimony of the past, in which the ability to shape and the light breath of the first expressions of poetry in the West merge into the simplest material.
Guardian of this heritage of values and experiences, on an island where ceramics is culture, Mennella is the reference point of an immortal art thanks to the work that is handed down from generation to generation at the highest levels and in the European and international. Casamicciola Ceramiche Mennella.

Sant'Alessandro Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Going towards Casamicciola, to the right of the port, you see the Castiglione wood; just before reaching it there is the small hill of Sant'Alessandro, ending towards the sea in a small beach, called "of the English". On the hill, along the ramps, there is a 13th century chapel, with a rectangular plan, extrados vaulted roof and rustic facade, which is a typical example of minor Ischia architecture. Founded on the initiative of the Di Manso family of ancient Benevento origins, owner of the whole hill, it was dedicated to the martyr pope Sant'Alessandro. Near the church, the Di Mansos had a small building, inserted in an older complex, of which today only a lava stone portal from the 15th century in the "Durazzesco-Catalan" style remains, whose architectural solution of the arc tangent to the rectangular molding represents a unicum on the island, while equivalents are found in Naples in the Bonifacio and Penne palaces.

Highlight • Settlement

Pretty place with a small port. All connections to Naples go from here. The car driver is significantly cheaper than the speedboat.

Church of Santa Maria di Portosalvo

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of S. Maria di Portosalvo was built by the Bourbons: begun in 1854 on a project by Eng. Quaranta, with the laying of the first stone presided over by the bishop of Ischia Felice Romano and by King Ferdinand II, was completed in 1856. The church, whose prospectus is on two floors, has a Latin cross plan, with three naves, decorated on the outside by a Greek-style peristyle. There are three large paintings, oil on canvas, of the Neapolitan school of the nineteenth century which hang above the three altars. The larger one belongs to Vincenzo De Angelis, and represents S. Maria di Portosalvo with the SS. Trinity and under the newly opened port. On the left, again by De Angelis, the depiction of S. Giuda Taddeo with Christ (1855) while, on the right, the painting by Battista Santoro depicts S. Francesco di Paola (1886), who together with other monks are resting on a cloak as they cross the Strait of Messina. Note the figure of a young man in the lower left corner of the canvas: it is the portrait of Francesco II, the last king of Naples. Since 1886 there has been the image of "Maria SS., Refuge of sinners", which has characterized the Marian devotion.
