Citadel and Fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré

Highlight • Historical Site

The city was surrounded by Vauban of a belt of ramparts arranged according to the principles of the engineer. North-east of the city is the citadel; north of the citadel, is a small port formed by two pincer-shaped jetties. The citadel is square with bastions at each of its angles. A half-moon is in front of each of its fronts. The entrance is located to the north, opposite the port, through the so-called "Montluc" gate, the Doric arrangement of which consists of two large pilasters with triglyphic entablature and pediment. Between the entablature and the circular opening of the entrance is a large square carved tympanum. The citadel chapel is inside the enclosure, behind the eastern flank. It opens with a Doric door with a circular pediment. This citadel is a very complete and well-preserved work of military architecture by Vauban.
