Töll Hydroelectric Power Station

Highlight • Structure

Toell hydroelectric power station
The Töll hydroelectric power plant, the first large-scale power plant in South Tyrol and built from 1897 on the initiative of the mayors of Meran and Bozen and based on a project by the Munich engineer Oscar von Miller, went online on April 5, 1898. The sawmill of the father of the probably most famous citizen of Parcines, Peter Mitterhofer, our inventor of the typewriter, once stood here. The water of the Adige is contained by a 16 m long rifle brigade at the height of the Töll fraction, a unique historical monument. The water reaches the surge tank with a total volume of 6000 m3, which is located at an altitude of 496 m above sea level, directly above the power plant, via a 480 m long gravity tunnel. Here the water of the Adige is dammed up and here the sluice house stands on three brick columns clad with porphyry stones, built in 1925 to operate the sluice. In 2003 it was renovated, preserving its original style, like the former "Zieglbrugg" (so named because it was once covered). An arched bridge is said to have stood at this point in Roman times, as documented by documents from the 14th and 16th centuries that are kept in the Johanneum in Innsbruck.
In addition to the two marble plaques commemorating the construction of the power plant, one from the K&K period and the other from the fascist period on the occasion of its enlargement, the Peter Mitterhofer cultural hiking trail in the direction of Rabland, as well as the Marlinger Waalweg and very close to the Algunder Waalweg.

The Etschtal cycle path
1st stage: from Reschen to Meran
The first section leads from Reschen to Meran. The Etschtal cycle path runs through the Vinschgau and the Meran area, through orchards, apple orchards and picturesque villages. The destination of the stage is the sophisticated spa town of Meran with its Mediterranean flair. The thermal baths invite you to relax after a strenuous day on the saddle and give you new strength for the next stage.

The perfect place to rest. From here you have an incredibly beautiful view of Merano and the valley, in the background the mountains, just fantastic. For resting there are also tables and benches.

After a stop at the "Leiter am Waal" restaurant
Of course we also drove back to Meran via Mittelplars, Algund. Cell phone battery was unexpectedly completely empty 🤔
