Huelgoat Stone Bridge and Mill

Highlight • Bridge

Huelgoat is a place conducive to rest and discovery. Tourism is reasoned there, and it is a real pleasure to discover a pretty Breton village, a remarkable natural site and a very pleasant lake, which offers lovely walks.

Victor Segalen, the author of the immemorials, writer, traveler and poet was recovering from depression in Hulgoat in 1919. He died in the town in strange circumstances which remain unclear.

Chaos Mill

Highlight • Other

Just after the bridge over the dam lake is this mill, built in the 16th century with typical granite stones - one of the gateways to the "chaos", the wild rocks. In the past, it housed a dwelling house and a room in which the mechanisms of the mill were located. It was fed by an artificial lake of 15 hectares which collected the waters of two rivers, including the Fao.

With all my imagination I couldn't see what could conclude a household or a virgin here, but it is a beautiful place, especially when the sun makes the mossy rocks shine!

Arthur's Cave

Highlight • Gorge

Another magical place in this forest is Artus Cave. It is indeed King Arthur who would have taken refuge in this cave. Artus also means bear.

So is this cave connected to the legend of a Breton king that later became myth or more prosaically is it connected to a bear's den? It's up to you to choose between reason and legend. In any case, it is a splendid place to discover.

The Devil's Cave

Highlight • Natural Monument

Steep tunnel descending under the rocks. We quickly find ourselves in the dark, and we can observe the river flowing below. A guardrail allows you to hold on along the descent, but the moss and humidity make the path slippery. However, the atmosphere of the place is magical.

Starting in Huelgoat (in the heart of Brittany) at the lake of the same name, the most wondrous rock formations accompany you at every turn on a tour through the Huelgoat Forest. Absolutely worth it!

"Magic forest" could not describe more aptly how the forest shows itself! A place of legends that brings to life. Caves, mossy trees, big rocks. There is something for everyone here. Also great for children and definitely beautiful in autumn! Absolutely recommendable!

The circular hike starts at the l'Arquellen car park and leads through the (partly) natural forest along some rock formations ("Grotte des Artus") to the Camp d'Artus, which actually used to be a Gallic oppidum. Just before Huelgoat we reach the River Argent and the main attraction of the hike: the rock formations in the river bed. In the lively …

Enchanted forest, you should plan time. Lots of stops to watch, read, take pictures, dream. Then buy baguette and cheese in town and have a picnic by the lake :-)
