What to expect on Catalina Airport – Wingley Overlook to Avalon loop from Santa Catalina Island
The route offers a journey through Catalina's diverse landscapes, starting from the Airport in the Sky and winding down towards Avalon. You'll encounter varied terrain, from paved roads with significant downhill stretches to unpaved dirt fire roads, gravel, and occasionally rocky sections due to erosion. Expect sweeping vistas of Avalon Harbor, rugged interior wildlands, and panoramic ocean views, with potential sightings of Shark Harbor and Little Harbor. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like bison and island foxes as you traverse the pine-dusted hills and coastal cliffs. This ride is a serious workout, with rolling hills and steep ascents and descents throughout, making it ideal for confident cyclists who thrive on a physical challenge.
Planning your visit
To access the interior trails on this loop, you must obtain a Freewheeler Bike Pass from the Catalina Island Conservancy. Be prepared for limited to no cell service for most of the ride, though solar panels along the route can offer sporadic Wi-Fi. Carrying ample water is crucial, as sources are scarce after leaving the Airport in the Sky. Many cyclists opt to take a shuttle service to the Airport in the Sky to mitigate the most strenuous initial climbs, then enjoy the ride back down to Avalon.
