In 1872, Kasper Dambacher built the first iron foundry on the property on the Karl Heine Canal in the Plagwitz district. In 1874 the foundry started here, before only 8 years later the company "Schumann&Koppe" took over the property including buildings to manufacture small fittings here. This is followed by the changeover to heavy fittings and various apparatus for steam systems. The plant developed strongly around the turn of the century, whereupon a second foundry had to be built in Leutzsch. In 1906, an engineering milestone was achieved with the first permanent mold casting in Germany. Classified as an armaments factory in World War I, fittings are manufactured for the German U-boats of the Kriegsmarine, after which the factory is extensively expanded after the war. But the global economic crisis brought a low point before the plant was able to recover in the mid-1930s and reached its capacity limits. The "Schumann&Koppe" company now leases the adjacent tram station and converts its depot halls into workshops, doubling the company property. During the Second World War, armaments production with fittings for submarines was resumed. The factory suffers severe damage from air raids, whereupon attempts are made to make it more secure against attacks with basements. In 1946, one year after the World War, the company was expropriated after the socialist economic conversion and so the SAG "Podjomnik" was created with 618 employees. In 1950, the company was renamed SAG "Transmasch", and several new construction and conversion measures were carried out. In 1970, with the formation of combines in the GDR economy, "Transmasch" was incorporated into the combine "Magdeburger Armaturenwerke Karl-Marx (MAW)". Until 1990, valves for chemicals, power plants and oil pipelines were produced in 4 different plants in Leipzig. The business continued as "Industriearmaturen Leipzig GmbH" until 1996, before this was closed as well. Today the site of the old West factory is used for cultural purposes and exhibitions.
