Phoenix Lake

Highlight • Lake

There used to be a huge industrial area here, the Phoenix Ost steelworks. It was recultivated, a lake, a residential area and a local recreation area were created. Today you can relax here and at the same time you are reminded of the past of this place and the Ruhr area itself.

Totem with Magpie Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

Shortly after the Bird Woman comes the artwork Totem with Magpie. The "Ghosts of the Emscher Valley" consisted of the two works "Bird Woman" and "Totem with Magpie", which were installed on the southern bank of the Phoenix Lake in Dortmund-Hörde during the exhibition and then moved to the Emscher-Weg on the other side of the lake. A third sculpture "Observer (Oraculum)" was located on the site of the Hansa coking plant in Dortmund-Huckarde and is no longer preserved. Source: emscherkunstweg.de

Dortmund kidney - cycling training track

The cycling training course in the midst of the green of Dortmund is a "legend" with many stories. Created in the 1980s on the initiative of the then sports department Erich Rüttel, offers the 798 -meter-long and paved track with a slightly undulating circuit on a former brownfield in the immediate vicinity of the Westfalenpark between the railway line and the Emscher both the cycling clubs and recreational cyclists training opportunities. However, the facility has long been a social function, with ambitious amateur cyclists, young people and seniors meet here a variety of cycling interests on each other and so the system not only offers training facilities, but also versatile social contacts and is a regular meeting place for all sorts of groups here both under sporting aspects train as well as have many stories in stock and take care of the offspring.

The plant has its name through its route, which has similarity to a human kidney, the route has national recognition. Once a year, the Dortmund summer track championship is held here, at all other times, the cycling training track is freely accessible to any interested cyclist without any special opening hours or costs.

You can reach the track from the parking lot at the Buschmühle, 44139 Dortmund on the B54 / exit Westfalenhalle / Westfalenpark. From here, the rest must be put back on foot / by bike.

"The smelting man"

Not just a bronze sculpture, but a work of art with history.

1953, the Hörder Neumarkt was embellished by a new fountain.
At its edge, on a pedestal, stood a steel cooker made of bronze
"The Hüttenmann", created by the Dortmunder Sculptor Friedel Dornberg.
Six years later, he suddenly disappeared from the marketplace. The Hörder citizens spoke of a night and fog action because they were not informed in advance. The hut man was simply "transferred" to the Dortmund Central Station to greet the incoming visitors to the Federal Garden Show. Later he had his place in the Westfalenpark for a few years, overlooking the blast furnaces. It is thanks to the local historian Willi Garth that he was able to return to his old homeland in 2009. About 300 m as the crow flies from the former location on Hörder Neumarkt, he now "guards" the Phoenix West area as a typical figure of a bygone era.
