Wahlstorf Manor

Highlight • Historical Site

Oldest estate in Schleswig-Holstein
“The Wahlstorf estate is a unique oasis where the Orient and the Occident meet in magical nature.”
The Wahlstorf estate, located in the beautiful Holstein Switzerland, is one of the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein and a rare, well-preserved example of an estate from the 16th century. With its late medieval architectural style, it is of architectural significance. The listed estate now includes the manor house, three historic barns and a horse stable. The explorer, ornithologist, zoologist, film producer, painter and writer Victor Baron von Plessen (1900-1980) lived here, who set off on numerous expeditions to the Malay Archipelago from 1924 to 1938. The Wahlstorf estate, the inventory and the East Asian collection of Victor Baron von Plessen are now owned by the Plessen Foundation Wahlstorf. The agricultural operation of approximately 900 hectares is managed by the Foundation

The Schwentine is one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein at 68 km[3]. It rises 1.7 km southwest of the highest point in the state, the Bungsberg, on a spring meadow northeast of the village of Bergfeld (Kasseedorf) and flows through the entire Holstein Switzerland with numerous large lakes. The river flows through the towns of Eutin, Bad Malente, Plön, Preetz, Schwentinental (Raisdorf and Klausdorf) and flows into the Kiel Fjord (Baltic Sea) in Kiel between the districts of Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf.

Gut Kühren

Highlight • Historical Site

Gut Kuehren is located in the Plön district, south of the small town of Preetz and is the eighth generation in the Graf von Bülow family.
The estate is unfortunately not accessible to the public.

The estate has been used for agriculture and forestry since 1776.

According to the different epochs, agriculture was always aligned with different focuses, such as cow and pig farming.

The courtyard has changed a lot over the long time.

Until the sixties of the last century, the so-called castle, which had been rebuilt several times, and the large courtyard with 6 large reth roof barns for various uses were the focus of the estate.

In the second half of the last century, the "castle" and also the manor house from the time of the Thirty Years' War were demolished for structural reasons.

The thatched roof barns also had to make way because they were no longer economically viable due to the construction.

Modern, contemporary residential and farm buildings have been built in recent years, most recently two large stable systems for laying hens.

In 1996 a new manor house was built.

The current farm operates an area of 800 hectares in contemporary agriculture and forestry.
Today's cultivation of cereals, rapeseed, field beans, etc. is just as much a part of the business as the cultivation and marketing of Christmas trees.

Shoemaker with Dog statue, Preetz

Highlight • Monument

The work of a shoemaker isn't so easy when your dog tries to steal your shoes and even the mice have made themselves at home in your workshop. With a cheerful image and a touch of humor, the detailed sculpture recalls the history of shoemakers in Preetz. Around 1850, the town boasted 150 independent master shoemakers, 360 journeyman shoemakers, and 160 shoemaking apprentices. In addition, there was a large number of clog makers.

View of Lake Lanker

Highlight • Viewpoint

This lake is particularly distinguished by its abundance of bays. Almost the entire western area from the lakeshore to the railway tracks on the Preetz-Ascheberg line is designated as a nature reserve "Peninsulas and Bays in Lake Lanker".

Lake Lanker is 323.6 hectares in size, up to 21 m deep and lies about 19 m above sea level. It is divided into a larger northern part and a smaller southern part, which are connected by a little more than 1 m deep stream. Without islands, the length of its shoreline is 17 km. Lake Lanker is located in the municipalities of Preetz, Kühren, Wahlstorf and Schellhorn.

View of the Schwentine River

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Schwentine is a very special river. On its 62 kilometers, it winds through a varied landscape to the Kiel Fjord - and flows through 17 lakes. The natural originality of the river's course has been preserved on most sections. Very picturesque!
