Schwedenlöcher

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

The Schwedenlöcher are a particularly exciting section and my personal highlight in Saxon Switzerland. This section got its name during the Thirty Years' War, when farmers from the village of Rathenwalde fled there to escape the Swedish soldiers and occupiers of the village. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful gorge path in Saxon Switzerland that I know of. This particularly wild path has something almost fairytale-like about it and at times you feel like you are in the jungle.

Schwedenlöcher Stairs

Highlight • Trail

The path through the Schwedenlöcher leads over numerous stairs past impressive rock faces... absolutely worthwhile

The narrow, deeply cut rock crevice leads through a fascinating rocky world of steep sandstone walls, narrow passages, and numerous steps.
The path mostly runs over stairs and wooden walkways, which wind through the gorge and repeatedly open up new perspectives on the surrounding rock formations. The partly narrow and shady location creates a special, almost mystical atmosphere.

Schwedenlöcher Stairs

Highlight • Trail

The Schwedenlöcher (Swedish Holes) in Saxon Switzerland have approximately 700 steps. The hiking trail leads through a romantic rocky gorge, climbing a height difference of 160 meters. The Schwedenlöcher got their name during the Thirty Years' War, when residents of neighboring villages hid here with their belongings from the Swedes.

It's best to go very early or late, otherwise it gets very crowded!

From the hiking crossroads, descend into the Schwedenlöcher and turn right to the Pavilion Viewpoint. This offers a different view of the Bastei.

December 30, 2024,Kleine Wanderung Bastei und Schwedenlöcher (30.12.2024)
I spontaneously decided to take a short trip to Saxon Switzerland and decided to go to the Bastei again after a long time. Since I hadn't planned a particularly long tour, I started from the Bastei car park towards the Bastei and then hiked through the Schwedenlöcher. Next time I'll do a longer tour here and take a closer look …

Tour through the Schwedenlöcher. Very narrow, therefore not so great when there is a lot of "traffic". In any case from the bastion down, the other way round is not recommended. And definitely not a route for dogs!

Today's destination was the Saxon Switzerland National Park, with its highlights of the Bastei Bridge and the Schwedenlöcher (Sweden Holes).

We tackled the Bastei and all its facets quite early in the morning. The weather was dry and cloudy, perhaps because of this, the crowds were manageable. Another factor was certainly the early time of year, before the peak season. …

I have linked the Wikipedia entry for the Schwedenlöcher. Absolutely worth seeing 🤩👍

"Schwedenlöcher" is the name given to a romantic yet adventurous gorge between the Bastei massif and the Amselgrund valley near Rathen. The hiking trail leads you through gorge-like rocky paths, over approximately 840 steps and two steep iron ladders, through a unique rocky landscape. The elevation gain of 160 meters requires some stamina.

Extreme tourist spots require extreme measures. Get up at 5:00 a.m. and go 😅.

What can you say? Fascinatingly beautiful!

From Wikipedia:
"The Bastei (305.4 m above sea level) is a rock formation with a viewing platform in Saxon Switzerland on the right bank of the Elbe. It is one of the most visited (1.5 million per year) tourist attractions …
