Description
If you're looking for a truly epic road cycling challenge in New Mexico, the Gila Hot Springs – Gila Cliff Dwellings loop from Silver City is a world-class ride that delivers. This difficult 91.1-mile (146.6 km) route packs in a staggering 9798 feet (2986 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 8 hours and 26 minutes to complete. It's a demanding journey best suited for advanced cyclists seeking a grueling test of endurance and some of the most spectacular scenery the Southwest has to offer.
What to expect on Gila Hot Springs – Gila Cliff Dwellings loop from Silver City
This loop, often called the "Inner Loop" or part of the "Trail of the Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway," takes you on a dramatic journey through the 3.3 million-acre Gila National Forest. You'll transition from arid desert grasslands to high mountain vistas, encountering challenging curves, sustained climbs, and very steep descents. The route crosses the Continental Divide twice, offering panoramic views of deep canyons and forested mountains. A key highlight is the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, where you can see ancient cliff-side caves. Be prepared for the particularly challenging New Mexico Highway 15 section from Silver City, which features narrow roads and grades of 10-12% for several miles.
Planning your visit
Spring and fall are the best seasons for riding this loop, as they help you avoid the extreme heat of summer. While roadways like NM-15 and NM-35 generally have light to no traffic, shoulders can be limited, so stay alert. The NM-15 section is notably narrow and not recommended for vehicles over 17 feet, which gives you an idea of its tight turns and steepness. If you plan to visit Gila Hot Springs, be aware it requires a short detour from the main byway to access the soaking areas.
