Highlight • Settlement

Como is a beautiful town in Lombardy located not far from the Swiss border. Embellished by the suggestive lakefront, Como also boasts a notable historical and cultural heritage. Of particular importance is its traditional silk industry which has roots as far back as the Middle Ages
The historic center of Como, with its cobbled streets, is very charming.

Villa Olmo

Highlight • Historical Site

Como - Villa dell'Olmo

The name of the villa goes back to a huge elm (Olmo) which, according to legend, Pliny the Younger planted and which once adorned the villa's park. The original plans for the villa in the neoclassical style (today the central building) are by Simone Cantoni from Muggio in the canton of Ticino, designed in the late 18th century. The first owner was Innocenzo Odescalchi, the subsequent owners expanded the building by adding wings, without however distorting the stylistic appearance of the villa. Famous guests include Napoleon and Garibaldi. Today the villa belongs to the municipality of Como, which has been using it for cultural events since its restoration.

The main facade faces Lake Como and consists of the central building (i.e. the original villa) - which is rhythmically divided by columns and optical facade elements, pilasters - and is topped by a roof terrace with statues - as well as the two side wings of the building.

The clearly structured exterior transforms into a magnificent interior: here there is an abundance of stucco, gold decorations and frescoes by artists from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Among all the rooms, the Teatrino, a small theatre with 92 seats (1853), stands out particularly, with its decorative charm and frescoes by Fontana.

In the park there is a small neoclassical temple and a small stream flows. In the center of the garden - opposite the villa - there is a fountain depicting two children playing with a sea monster; a work by the sculptor G. Odofrechi. The attic is dedicated to an exhibition of the architect Antonio Sant'Elia (1886-1916), the first proponent of futuristic architecture.

Place of tourist, natural and historical interest

It is located in the municipality of Tremezzina, in correspondence with the inlet on the western coast of the Como branch between Argegno and the Lavedo peninsula, in the waters in front of the Zoca de l'oli (oil basin): it is one of the northernmost territories of the 'Italy where, in a particularly mild climatic condition, olive trees are grown and olive oil is produced.

The old owner, Giuseppe Caprani, left the island as a legacy to King Albert I of Belgium, who donated it to the Italian state. The latter in turn sold it to the president of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts with the aim of building a village for artists and a hotel. Currently the island is owned by the Brera Academy, in Milan

Every year, on the Sunday closest to June 24th, the traditional feast of San Giovanni takes place, with a solemn procession of boats and the traditional fireworks display on the lake

Tremezzo

Highlight • Settlement

Tremezzo gave its name to the bank of the Tremezzina, which is also called the bank of the azaleas and has been praised as the place of eternal spring since the Middle Ages. Perhaps the name Tremezzo comes from its location 'in the middle' (Tremezzo) way between Como and Sorico on the ancient Via Regina. Here the lake opens to the north - even if it still seems to be bisected by the Bellagio peninsula. From 1928 to 1947 Tremezzo, Lenno and Mezzegra were a single municipality called Tremezzina.

This itinerary follows the route of the old railway which from 1884 to 1939 connected Menaggio with Porlezza on Lake Lugano. The route develops in Val Menaggio, mostly on asphalted surfaces and touches the Lago di Piano nature reserve. Please note that some short sections take place along roads open to car traffic.

The railway line between Menaggio and Porlezza, inaugurated in 1884, was created with the aim of increasing northern European tourism towards the lake region. Arriving by train in Lugano, the passengers continued by steamer to Porlezza and from there by train to Menaggio. Between the two world wars, until 1939, the railway line was used as a local transport system, for the transport of wood from the forests of Monte Galbiga and the ice of Lake Piano, and then fell into abandonment at the end of the Second World War .

Lake Piano

Highlight • Lake

The small lake “Lago di Piano” is located in Val Menaggio in a nature reserve and offers an interesting opportunity to observe various water birds. The path begins in the picturesque village of Bene Lario and leads along the foot of Monte Galbiga through meadows and forests and past the lake. The “Castel San Pietro”, a medieval group of fortified houses, is very interesting.
