Description
If you're looking for a challenging road cycling adventure with unparalleled Grand Canyon views, the North Rim Campground – Walhalla Overlook loop from North Rim delivers. This difficult 48.7-mile (78.3 km) road cycling route, with 3863 feet (1177 metres) of climbing, takes roughly 3 hours and 56 minutes to complete. It's best suited for experienced cyclists who are prepared for significant elevation changes and narrow, winding roads, offering a unique perspective on the canyon's vastness and its many natural features.
What to expect on North Rim Campground – Walhalla Overlook loop from North Rim
This route primarily follows the paved Cape Royal Road, winding approximately 23 miles (37 km) across the Walhalla Plateau. As you pedal, you'll be treated to expansive views of the Grand Canyon, including the majestic Colorado River, the historical Unkar Delta, Echo Cliffs, and the distant Painted Desert. The ride passes through diverse forested areas of aspens and ponderosa pines, which are particularly vibrant in the fall. Walhalla Overlook itself, at 7,400 feet (2,255 m), offers panoramic vistas across to the South Rim. Be prepared for a sustained effort due to the high altitude and elevation gain, making this a rewarding ride for confident road cyclists.
Planning your visit
While the North Rim generally sees less traffic than the South Rim, Cape Royal Road can still have vehicles, and the National Park Service deems road cycling on it "extremely hazardous" due to narrow sections and blind spots. There is no potable water available along Cape Royal Road, so you must carry sufficient hydration. Starting early in the morning can help you avoid heavier traffic. The high altitude of the North Rim, ranging from 7,500 to 8,900 feet, will add to the physical challenge, so plan accordingly.
