Description

If you're looking for a challenging day out on two wheels, the Lake Easton State Park – Whittier Tunnel loop from Hyak is a difficult 58.3-mile (93.8 km) gravel biking route with 1602 feet (488 metres) of climbing, taking around 5 hours and 1 minute to complete. This route is a serious undertaking for experienced gravel riders who want to push their limits and enjoy diverse scenery in the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range.

What to expect on Lake Easton State Park – Whittier Tunnel loop from Hyak

Expect a varied ride primarily on dirt and gravel surfaces, making it perfect for gravel bikes with at least 32mm tires. The route follows sections of the Palouse to Cascades State Park Trail, offering views of the 697-acre Lake Easton, the Yakima River, and mixed coniferous forests. You'll traverse historic trestles and bridges, and pass through the short Whittier Tunnel. While the grade is generally gentle, be prepared for a gradual uphill climb as you head towards Snoqualmie Pass, requiring sustained effort.

Planning your visit

A Discover Pass or a day pass is required for parking at Lake Easton State Park. The trail is generally flat with an easy-to-negotiate grade, but the sheer distance and elevation gain make this a difficult ride. Come prepared with plenty of water, snacks, and lunch, as services are minimal in some remote sections. Autumn offers brilliant fall colors, making it a particularly scenic time to visit.
