Description
The Memorial Falls – Tannery Falls loop from Munising is a challenging jogging route that, when open, would offer a rewarding experience. Rated difficult, this 13.3-mile (21.3 km) trail features 1011 feet (308 metres) of elevation gain and would typically take around 2 hours and 21 minutes to complete. However, it's crucial to know that the Twin Waterfalls Memorial Plant Preserve, encompassing both Memorial and Tannery Falls, is currently closed indefinitely for significant improvements, making it unsuitable for jogging at this time.
What to expect on Memorial Falls – Tannery Falls loop from Munising
When the preserve eventually reopens, you can anticipate a journey through picturesque scenery, highlighted by the two impressive waterfalls. Memorial Falls, sometimes known as Twin Falls, boasts a 40-foot drop, while Tannery Falls, also with a 40-foot drop, plunges into a striking sandstone canyon where you can even walk behind the falls. The vertical walls of these canyons are composed of ancient Munising Formation sandstone, adding a unique geological element to the landscape. While historically the walks to the falls were short and easy, combining them into this longer loop for jogging would present a difficult challenge, best suited for experienced runners.
Planning your visit
Currently, the most critical aspect of planning your visit is the indefinite closure of the Twin Waterfalls Memorial Plant Preserve. The Michigan Nature Association (MNA) is undertaking extensive work, including rerouting trails and upgrading infrastructure, to balance protection with future visitor access. Therefore, this trail is not accessible for jogging. For the most up-to-date information on the preserve's status and anticipated reopening, you should check the Michigan Nature Association's website at michigannature.org. If you're looking for alternative jogging trails in the Munising area while this preserve is closed, consider options like Munising Falls or Wagner Falls.
