Description
If you're looking to truly immerse yourself in the grandeur of ancient redwoods from the saddle of your bike, the Founders Tree – The Founders Grove loop from Founders Grove is a moderate road cycling route that delivers. This 23.0-mile (37.0 km) journey, with 2057 feet (627 metres) of elevation gain, takes about 2 hours and 9 minutes to complete, offering a deep dive into the world's tallest trees for cyclists with good fitness.
What to expect on Founders Tree – The Founders Grove loop from Founders Grove
This route primarily follows the iconic Avenue of the Giants, a paved scenic byway that winds through the heart of Humboldt Redwoods State Park. You'll glide beneath a towering canopy of redwoods, with lush ferns carpeting the forest floor, experiencing the sheer scale of these ancient giants. While cycling isn't permitted directly on the Founders Grove Nature Trail, you can easily stop to walk among immense trees like the Founders Tree and the fallen Dyerville Giant. Expect some gentle curves and mostly flat sections, but be prepared for climbs that can reach grades of 8-10% on certain segments, making a bike with gears essential.
Planning your visit
The best time to ride this loop is during spring and early fall for lighter traffic and pleasant weather. While the Avenue of the Giants is paved, some longer loop segments might be unpaved, so check conditions if you plan to extend your ride. Be aware that some sections may have little to no shoulder, and traffic noise from Highway 101 can be present in parts of the Founders Grove area. Parking is available at various points along the Avenue of the Giants, including near Founders Grove, allowing you to access the walking trails.
