Description
If you're looking for a relaxed touring cycling route near Brattleboro that offers scenic riverside views without a lot of climbing, the Black Mountain Trailhead – West River loop delivers. This moderate 15.4-mile (24.7 km) route, which takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, primarily follows the flat West River Trail, making it a fantastic option for a leisurely ride. While the name might suggest a mountain ascent, this loop is designed for touring cyclists to enjoy the river valley, not the steep Black Mountain Trail itself.
What to expect on Black Mountain Trailhead – West River loop from Brattleboro
This route is a journey along the West River, largely utilizing the historic West River Trail. You'll cycle on a mostly flat, hard-packed dirt and gravel surface, perfect for hybrid or mountain bikes, as you trace the path of a former railroad. The scenery is consistently beautiful, with continuous views of the river on one side and wooded areas, including mixed hardwoods and wetlands, on the other. Keep an eye out for wildlife like beavers and herons, especially near marshy sections. About a mile from the Marina Trailhead, you'll pass through the Riverstone Preserve, a unique area protecting floodplain forest. Be aware that the actual Black Mountain Trail is a difficult hiking trail and is not permitted for mountain biking, so this loop uses local roads to complete the circuit back to Brattleboro after enjoying the West River Trail.
Planning your visit
The West River Trail section is generally easy and family-friendly due to its minimal elevation changes. You can access the trail easily from Brattleboro. The surface is mostly compacted stone dust, but some sections may have roots and rocks. It's important to note that occasional flooding can occur in the spring, so check conditions if you plan to ride during that season. This route is best enjoyed when the trail is dry, offering a smooth and pleasant experience.
