The river is a tidal river and Hangzhou has repeatedly been subject to immense damage and devastation when a spring tide rushed up the river. A folk tale has it that King Qian and 10000 archers faced off the God of the Tide, shooting multiple salvos of arrows at the oncoming tide until it retreated.
