Description
If you're looking for a truly unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a touch of adventure, the Sand Island Lighthouse loop from Sand Island is an excellent choice. This easy 4.2-mile (6.8 km) hiking route, with a gentle 97 feet (30 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 44 minutes. It's perfect for families, history enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a rewarding island exploration without strenuous climbs.
What to expect on Sand Island Lighthouse loop from Sand Island
The trail offers a diverse journey through Sand Island's landscapes. You'll wander through old-growth forests, where towering 250-year-old virgin white pines stand alongside sugar maple and yellow birch. Keep an eye out for remnants of the historic Hansen and Noring family farms, offering glimpses into the island's past. While generally flat, some sections can be slippery with roots and rocks, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The highlight for many is the iconic Sand Island Lighthouse, a striking Gothic Revival structure built in 1881, and the panoramic views of Lighthouse Bay from an overlook a quarter-mile south of it.
Planning your visit
Reaching Sand Island is part of the adventure; many visitors arrive via sea kayak from the mainland, a challenging 4.5-mile open-water crossing best suited for experienced paddlers or guided tours. Once on the island, be prepared for potential insects and mud, making long sleeves and waterproof boots advisable. Black bears inhabit the island, so proper food storage is essential. While the trail is accessible, check current conditions before you go, as some sections are being converted into accessible boardwalks.
