Description

If you're looking for a truly epic mountain biking challenge with views that will make your legs forget the climb, the Gibraltar Road loop from Zoo Train is absolutely worth your time. This difficult 28.3-mile (45.5 km) route packs in a massive 3784 feet (1153 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete. It's a demanding ride best suited for experienced mountain bikers ready for a serious workout and unparalleled coastal vistas.

What to expect on Gibraltar Road loop from Zoo Train

The journey on this loop is a constant reward, starting with a challenging ascent that gradually unveils increasingly spectacular views. As you climb, you'll be treated to expansive vistas of the Santa Barbara coastline and the Channel Islands, with the rugged beauty of the Los Padres National Forest surrounding you. The terrain shifts from paved sections to thrilling fire roads, especially if you opt for the 'Dirt Gibraltar' descent, offering a diverse and engaging ride. The views from the peak at La Cumbre are particularly stunning, making every pedal stroke worth it. This route demands very good fitness and confident bike handling, especially on the descents.

Planning your visit

Planning your ride requires some foresight. There's no available water on the route until Painted Cave Road, so carry plenty, especially given how hot it can get in summer. While traffic on Gibraltar Road is generally mild, exercise caution on descents, some of which are notoriously technical with sharp turns and poor surfaces; hydraulic disc brakes are strongly recommended. The best time to tackle this loop is outside of peak summer heat, and always be prepared for significant elevation changes.
