Eichbaum Lake

Highlight • Lake

Although the sandy beach and water of Eichbaumsee are tempting, swimming is prohibited. The reason for this is the health risk posed by recurring, potentially toxic blue-green algae. Furthermore, ongoing investigations are being carried out on the lake.

The lake is fed by groundwater. It was created between 1972 and 1976 by sand mining from a tributary of the Dove-Elbe River. Two bathing areas with sandy beaches and lawns are located to the north and east of the lake.

Caution: There are cliffs near the shore where the water suddenly becomes very deep. This is typical of a gravel pit. In Eichbaumsee, massive growth of toxic blue-green algae often occurs in summer. In recent years, extensive remediation measures have been carried out to preserve the lake as a long-term bathing area.

A perfect destination for a day trip with horses and dogs.
Eichbaumsee is a particularly beautiful destination for a day trip with animals.

There's a large dog-running area between the lake and the Elbe River.

In addition to a dog beach, there's also a horse swimming pool,
a bathing area where you can take your horse for a swim in the Elbe River.

View of Eichbaumsee

Highlight • Lake

The Eichbaumsee is located in the southeast of Hamburg in the marshlands in the district of Allermöhe.
The lake is about one kilometer long, 280 meters wide and has an area of 0.24 km².
Its greatest depth is 16 meters.
It was created in 1972 after the sand quarrying needed for the A25 motorway and is only fed by groundwater.
Until the expansion of the regatta course (1977) in the Dove Elbe, it was still in direct connection with it; today there is probably only a small exchange of water with the Dove Elbe through permeable layers of sediment.
The lake was a bathing lake popular with the people of Hamburg, but it is often heavily infested with algae in hot summers.
Despite remedial measures through deep water aeration with a system known as "Polyp I" in March 2005 and in March 2007 with "Polyp II", bathing had to be prohibited because of the blue-green algae.
Since the end of August 2007 there has been a general bathing ban.
The Eichbaumsee is stocked with carp, pike, zander and tench by the Hamburg Anglers' Association and was known for catching large carp before the fish died out in 2009.
The Wutzrock Festival takes place every summer on the meadow east of the lake.

Dove Elbe (Allermöhe) Regatta Course

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

It was opened in 1985 with a length of two kilometers on the disused branch of the Elbe and has since served as the venue for numerous regattas.
The facility is assigned to the Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein Olympic training center and, as a state training centre, is a central location for competitive rowing and canoeing in northern Germany.
