Rated difficult, this route is for experienced cyclists seeking West Maui's most dramatic coastal views and a serious workout.
What to expect on Honoapiʻilani Highway – Nakalele Blowhole loop from Sugar Cane Train Kaanapali Station
As you embark on this journey, you'll experience a dramatic shift in scenery and terrain. Initial sections near Lahaina and Kapalua offer smoother roads, but the real challenge begins north of Kapalua. Here, the road narrows significantly, with steep climbs, winding hairpin turns, and occasionally rough or unpaved sections. Be prepared for a demanding ascent, including "The Wall" near Honokohau Bay with its 20% grade. The reward is continuous Pacific Ocean views and dramatic cliff-edge vistas, leading to the iconic Nakalele Blowhole. Don't miss a stop at Lorraine's banana bread stand in Kahakuloa for a well-deserved break. This route is best for cyclists with very good fitness who are comfortable with narrow roads and significant climbing.
Planning your visit
While the starting point references the former Sugar Cane Train Kaanapali Station, which ceased operations in 2019, you'll find parking in the vicinity. The northern sections of the Honoapiʻilani Highway are very narrow with countless blind turns, so take it slow and stay alert. Traffic can be a concern, as drivers on Maui may not always be accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists. Always prioritize safety and caution, especially on blind corners.
