Statue of Birutė

Highlight • Monument

Birutė (1330-1382) was the Grand Duchess of Lithuania as the second wife of Kęstutis, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and mother of Vytautas the Great. There is very little known about Birutė's life, but after her death a cult worshiping her developed among Lithuanians, especially in Samogitia.

Birutė was born in or close to Palanga to a Lithuanian, Samogitian or Curonian magnate family. The story of her marriage to Kęstutis became a romantic legend in Lithuania.

The bronze sculpture of Birutė is near her presumed grave

The original small wooden Catholic church in Palanga was built around 1540 at the behest of Grand Duchess Anna Jagiellon. Another cruciform church with a tower and bell tower was built in 1590 at the initiative of the then rulers of Lithuania. In 1767, the wooden church was reconstructed and stood for 140 years.
In 1897, according to plans by Swedish architect Karl Eduard Strandmann, construction of a new church in the neo-Gothic style began next to the old church, which was consecrated in 1906 and completed in 1907. After the completion of a new church made of brick masonry with a 24-meter spire, the old wooden church was demolished. (Wikipedia)
