Description
If you're looking for one of New York's most challenging road cycling climbs, the Whiteface Mountain Toll House – Whiteface Mountain Summit loop from Henry's Woods delivers. This difficult 58.1-mile (93.6 km) road cycling route features a staggering 5390 feet (1643 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 4 hours and 54 minutes. It's a serious test for experienced cyclists seeking a significant physical challenge and breathtaking panoramic views.
What to expect on Whiteface Mountain Toll House – Whiteface Mountain Summit loop from Henry's Woods
This route is defined by the relentless ascent of the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, a fully paved road stretching approximately 8 miles to just below the summit of Whiteface Mountain. Expect a continuous and steep climb with an average gradient of around 8%, including sections reaching over 10%. As you grind your way up, the scenery transforms from dense wooded areas to more exposed alpine terrain, offering stunning views of the Adirondack State Park, Lake Champlain, Vermont, and even Canada on clear days. At the summit, you'll find a stone castle, a restaurant, and an elevator to the very top, providing 360-degree vistas. This climb is often compared to legendary European ascents like Alpe d'Huez, making it ideal for advanced cycling training.
Planning your visit
Cyclists must stop at the toll house, located about three miles into the ascent, to pay a fee for the remaining five miles of the highway (an $8 toll as of 2018). Some local cyclists opt to ride before the toll booth opens to avoid this fee. The Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway is known for its pristine and well-maintained paved surface. While the route name mentions Henry's Woods, note that Henry's Woods itself is not suitable for road cycling, so your ride will primarily focus on the paved highway.
