Sonnenkap Campsite

Highlight • Rest Area

The Sonnenkap campsite opened on June 1st, 2021.
There are pitches for caravans, tents, but also rentable huts and accommodation for cyclists. The campsite also has a restaurant, shop, sauna and salt cave. Big advantage, it's not far to the water and you have a very good view over the lake.

Built from 1275 to 1343 as the monastery church of the Dominican monastery. The church is 40 m long, 18 m wide and has a clear height of 30.70 m. Inside there is an altarpiece from 1609 and a baptismal font from the early 15th century.

A very interesting monument hidden in the backyard of apartment blocks.
How impressive this building must have been can be seen from the preserved tower massif. Its base, set on a stone foundation and a plinth finished with a beveled cornice, is made of precisely machined granite squares with a regular thread, joined with lime mortar.
In the west façade there is a main entrance portal of impressive size. The stepped jamb made of precisely fitted squares and granite wedges is closed with a pointed arch. The edges of the faults are decorated alternately with a roller and a holkel. The individual parts of the portal are separated by a plinth cornice at the bottom and prismatic, concavely profiled resistors, placed at the base of the archivolt, imitating column heads. Above the portal there is an equally impressive oculus with stepped jambs.
- Construction began at the beginning of the 12th century in the form of an early-Gothic, three-nave basilica, built of granite squares.
- Superstructure of the brick tower from the 14th century.
- In the second half of the 16th century, due to the poor technical condition of the building, the Protestant community moved to the former Dominican monastery church.
- During the following years, the unused church was progressively devastated.
- In the eighteenth century, as a result of the planned construction of military barracks, the walls of the nave were demolished.
- In 1946, the tower was destroyed by fire.
- In 1997, the temple was rebuilt and secured as a permanent ruin.

The best-known views of Prenzlau, which lies on the Unteruckersee, are probably the brick buildings of St. Mary's Church and the Mitteltorturm. If you are interested in churches and monasteries, you will find it here: various buildings from the 13th and 14th centuries can be found here. As a stage destination on the Berlin-Usedom bike path Prenzlau also offers enough refreshment and swimming for exhausted cyclists.
