Fleesensee Castle

Malchow Town Hall

The town hall is the central representative building in the historic city center.
The building, set far back, forms the design focal point with the Alter Markt (Old Market), the surrounding buildings, and the brick-red, visible Amtsgericht (District Court).
It was built between 1818 and 1821 in the Neoclassical style as a half-timbered building with a balcony. The so-called functional half-timbering was given a monochrome gray paint finish to give the building a nobler appearance, resembling a solid structure.
Until the completion of the Amtsgericht in 1881, court hearings also took place in the town hall hall. For this purpose, the city set up several heated prison cells in the town hall attic, which can still be viewed today. These were used as detention cells until the 1950s of the last century.
After structural changes to and in the town hall occurred at regular intervals, the monument-appropriate renovation of this building began in 2004.
After years of decay, one of the oldest and most historic houses on the island could thus be returned to its original use.
