Cartagena Arsenal

Highlight • Historical Site

The Cartagena Arsenal serves as the base for several units of the Spanish Navy and as a logistics hub for ships calling at Cartagena. It is one of Spain's oldest naval bases, founded in the 18th century. Construction of the Arsenal began in late 1731 and was completed in 1782 during the reign of Charles III. In the 18th century, the naval base was a significant industrial complex with shipyards and workshops for carpentry, rigging, and metalwork, as well as craft workshops producing ship ornaments and decorations. The Arsenal employed several thousand people in the construction and maintenance of Spanish naval vessels. The naval base was expanded in 1849 during the reign of Isabella II.

Good views of the port and the city of Cartagena. Easy to reach from the north, from the southeast only via a miserable path (deep, coarse gravel).

The aircraft is a donation from the Spanish Air Force and the Spanish Ministry of Defense to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena. A symbol of the close cooperation between the two institutions.

The CASA C-101 Aviojet is a military training and light ground attack aircraft from the Spanish manufacturer Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A.

The first four aircraft entered service with the Spanish flying school in January 1980. The Spanish Air Force purchased the aircraft in large numbers and also equipped its Patrulla Águila aerobatic team with the type in 1985.
