The Lousios River flows through a stunning gorge, stretching from Karytaina to Dimitsana. With rapid waters and a narrow, forested gorge, it's great for hiking.

The river holds mythological importance, believed to be where Zeus washed after his birth, and was considered the coldest river in the world by Pausanias. This gorge is often called the "Mount Athos of the Peloponnese" due to the many monasteries along its walls, like Timiou Prodromou, Philosophou, Aimyalon and Panagias Kalamiou. It also boasts ancient water-mills for tobacco and gunpowder production, and at its southern end, you'll find the ancient city of Gortys.

New Monastery of the Philosopher

Highlight • Religious Site

The monastery is the “new building” (but also several hundred years old) of the old monastery 400 m further down the valley (worth seeing!).
During the Revolutionary War it played an important role as a hiding place. The Ottomans gouged out the eyes of many images in the chapel in revenge.

Prodromos Monastery

Here it is still 800m to the monastery:
The monks' cells (and guest accommodation) cling to the rock like swallows' nests and are supported from below with sticks - adventurous and spectacular. The monastery has lunchtime rest from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the legs must be covered, but for women not by trousers but by a skirt. You can borrow these at the entrance.
Besides, I wouldn't think it's such a tragedy to be here during closing times. It's more worth seeing from the outside anyway

September 17, 2024,Lousios River – Kloster Prodromou Runde von Atsicholos
What a great hike in the gorge. The highlights are the monasteries and churches. A circular hike is twice as fun because of the variety. Good shoes and enough to drink are important. We were at the monastery on the way back and were able to get in on time at 5 p.m. 🕰️. If you don't have any clothes …

Sturdy walking shoes recommended. Surefootedness helpful. Start the tour early in the morning, then the path is mostly in the shade. You can save yourself the last descent to the monastery of Moni Agiou Ioannou Prodromou by crossing the river. The final ascent to the starting point only leads over serpentines on a road.
