Zrínyi Street (Zrínyi utca) offers one of the most beautiful perspectives of St. Stephen's Basilica. The straight street leads directly towards the monumental facade of the Basilica, creating an impressive sightline in the heart of Budapest.
At the end of the street, the mighty dome of the Basilica rises above the surrounding buildings, drawing the eye. The view is particularly impressive in the early morning or in the evening hours, when the light highlights the neoclassical facade and the sandstone colors of the structure.
Built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Basilica is the largest church in Budapest and was dedicated to the first Hungarian king, Stephen I of Hungary. Its 96-meter-high dome symbolizes – just as high as the dome of the Parliament – the equality of state and religion.
Zrínyi Street itself is part of the historic cityscape of the city center. The mix of elegant Art Nouveau facades, small shops, and the imposing Basilica in the background makes it a popular photo motif and a classic component of many city tours through Budapest.
The view from Zrínyi Street towards St. Stephen's Basilica is considered one of the most characteristic city views of the Hungarian capital.

Kossuth Lajos Square and the Hungarian Parliament Building

Kossuth Lajos Square (Kossuth tér) is one of Budapest's most significant historical squares. It is located directly on the Danube bank in the Pest district and forms the representative forecourt of the famous Hungarian Parliament Building (Országház).
The square is named after Lajos Kossuth, the leading politician of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848/49 and a symbolic figure of the Hungarian fight for freedom. Kossuth advocated for national self-determination, civil rights, and a modern state order.

The Hungarian Parliament Building
The Parliament Building is Hungary's largest and one of its most impressive structures. It was built according to the plans of architect Imre Steindl. Construction began in 1885, and the inauguration took place in 1896 on the occasion of the thousand-year celebration of the founding of the Hungarian state.

The building impresses with:

its Neo-Gothic facade with numerous towers and decorations,
the 96-meter-high central dome,
the almost 270-meter-long facade facing the Danube,
hundreds of statues of Hungarian rulers, princes, and historical figures.

The number 96 has a special meaning: it commemorates the year 896, when the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin began.
Monuments and the historical significance of the square

On Kossuth Square, there are several important monuments:

the Kossuth Monument, commemorating the freedom fighter of 1848,
a monument to the victims of the 1956 Revolution,
statues of prominent Hungarian politicians and personalities.

The square was the scene of numerous historical events. Particularly famous is the mass rally of October 23, 1956, which marked the beginning of the Hungarian Uprising against communist rule. Even after the regime change in 1989, the square remained an important place for political celebrations and public gatherings.

Significance today
Today, Kossuth Lajos Square is a symbol of Hungarian statehood and democracy. The combination of the monumental Parliament Building, the Danube backdrop, and the historical monuments makes it one of Budapest's most impressive places – especially at sunrise or in the evening when the Parliament is illuminated.

The entire Margaret Island is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site for nothing. An adventure for the whole family. The island is also served by public transport buses, otherwise motorized traffic is prohibited. Toilets are everywhere, as are snack bars and restaurants. Admission is mostly free.
