Grand Union Canal

Highlight • River

Stretching 137 miles (220 km) from London to Birmingham, the Grand Union Canal was once an important waterway carrying trade to and from the capital. Today, narrowboats slowly cruise the waters, whilst cyclists and walkers enjoy the towpath.

Alternative Car Parking

Highlight • Parking

A few yards up Newport way is a small layby big enough for two cars. You could park here instead of Salcy Forest Horse Box Park as they now charge £6 a day to park.

May 5, 2022,Hanslope Circular Ride short 15 m
This mostly follows the Hanslope Circular Ride, which can be found on OS maps. In this version we take a short cut and miss out the section that clips the North end of Milton Keynes. We usually stop on Castlethorpe for lunch as there are some benches to sit on and a shelter if its a bit manky.

Haven't done this ride for a couple of years - before Covid. As I couldn't make either of the Grinders rides this week, I decided to check it out. It's a very enjoyable ride, I find it hard though, especially the section from Castleford to Tathall End, the trail is not particularly hilly but the trail is just hard going. …
Thought we would try some bridleways today. Weather was perfect. Most of the trails were OK, hard going in the thick grass but OK. Couple of short sections were so wet and deep mud we had to get off and push and one field had just been ploughed and was unrideable. We had intended to do the short 15-mile version …
We were going to do the full monty but got to Castlethorpe, had lunch and then chickend out. The trails were extremely rough due to the horses when the trails were wet; now they have set like concrete. Never known it so rough.
Didn't make the full route (again!). Unfortunately the nettles and brambles are starting to encroach but got away with only a very minor sting on this ride - its mostly free of undergrowth - just sign of what it might be like off-road from now on.
